Burrowing Owl in Bernal Heights

2007-11-027 CommentsBirding, Nature, Photography

This cute owl was found by our friends Deb & Terry in a tree across from their house in SF’s Bernal Heights neighborhood. It would be a happier sighting if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s been there for a couple of days in decidedly non-burrowing-owl-habitat (in my experience, they rarely perch at all, and when they do, it’s usually on fenceposts and the like), and was possibly flushed from its burrow by staircase construction on nearby Bernal Hill. They’re always a joy to look at, and this was my first BUOW of the year. Hopefully its den hasn’t been destroyed and it can return shortly, or is just passing through!

Thanks, Montucky, Monarch, Bernie & Chris! According to our friend, the bird only hung around for two days total before flying off to the south, so perhaps it was a migrant just passing through.
