Kitchen remodel (LONG!)

We’ve been quite busy remodelling our kitchen, but now we’re all but done save for a few odds and ends. This was our first major DIY project in our flat after refreshing our main bathroom last year, and it was quite a learning experience.

A long list of learnings & photos follows.

“The Valley of the Kings” by John Romer

Although this started out as a bit of a slow read, “Valley of the Kings” picked up steam after the first couple of chapters, and wound up being quite an interesting book.  It’s written sort of as a dual history; on the one hand it’s about the ancients who made these famous tombs, and on…

Great early evening birding @ Byxbee Park, Palo Alto

Today was my first proper birding outing of the new year, and it turned out to be a cracking one!

Rather than my usual walk around Palo Alto Baylands, I decided to go to nearby ByxbeePark, as a Short-eared Owl had been reported there recently.

Sure enough, I walked to the top of the hills by the landfill and a group of birders were scoping the marshes trying to re-find the owl, which some had seen flying low earlier. A few minutes later another birder arrived and pointed out a lovely SHORT-EARED OWL perched on a fence. My 300mm lens, even with a 1.4x TC, was no help here, but I got a very good look at it through a generous fellow birder’s scope – what a lovely bird, and what a great lifer to start 2007 with!

Other highlights (for me) were a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, WHITE-TAILED KITE, and NORTHERN HARRIER. The last two, although not uncommon, are always a pleasure to watch.

2006 bird list posted

I’ve posted my final 2006 bird list – although I got a number of lifers, my total # was lower than in 2005 (120 vs. 139), mostly because I did less away-from-home birding in 2006. The best thing about New Year’s birding is every bird is a year bird – I think I’ll look out…

Goodbye 2006 and welcome 2007!

I’ll bring in the new year with an Irish verse I heard long ago:

May joy surround you,
Good fortune find you,
And all your cares be left behind you.

Happy New Year, and best regards,
